Automated Final Inspection of Slot Filters for Alfa-Gorizont

Task / Problem

Slot oil filters with a length of up to 12 meters require high-precision control of the gap between the plates — from 50 to 500 µm.

Manual inspection takes a lot of time and doesn't provide the necessary repeatability. If a defect is missed, the customer risks receiving a product with unstable performance characteristics.

Solution

We have developed an inspection machine for the final control of slot gaps along the entire length of the filter.

The solution combines telecentric optics, industrial backlighting, a laser focusing sensor, and a scanner moving system along three axes.

The system automatically measures the gaps, saves the results, and generates a report on product suitability.

Key features:

  1. Full scanning of filters up to 12 m long
  2. Gap control in the range 50–500 µm
  3. Automatic laser-based focusing
  4. Multiple testing programs for various inspection scenarios
  5. Saving photos of defects and statistics in a database
Results
  • Reduced inspection time from over 2 hours to about 10 minutes per filter
  • Automated control of more than 4000 slots on a single product
  • Increased objectivity in filter element quality assessment
  • Accelerated production by reducing inspection time
  • Provided the production team with a tool for defect root-cause analysis and process tuning

Technical details:

  1. The scanning device is implemented as an optical micrometer: CMOS sensor, bi-telecentric lens, and industrial backlight.
  2. Laser triangulation sensor keeps the control area within the focus depth range with accuracy up to 1.5 mm.
  3. Various testing modes are available: test, standard, through single direction, and through four directions with filter rotation by 90°.
