PET Preform Monitoring System for Resilux

Issue / Problem

During PET preform production, defects may occur due to unstable operation of injection molding machines, raw material feed, and pigment feed.

Without real-time monitoring, defects are detected too late. This increases the amount of manual sorting and hinders quick identification of root causes.

Solution

We developed the Kvantron Preform Inspection Machine for automatic quality monitoring of preforms during manufacturing.

The system is integrated into the packaging conveyor and uses industrial vision, specialized lighting, and defect analysis algorithms.

It enables detection of serial defects and fast decision-making for corrective actions.

Key Features:

  1. In-line preform inspection right in the production flow
  2. Detection of multiple defects on a single preform at the same time
  3. Detection of defects as small as 0.1 mm
  4. Control of 70–85% of the flow in each product dump
  5. Various configurations — from 2 to 6 cameras depending on the task
Results
  • Reduced defective output thanks to real-time monitoring
  • Reduced the volume of manual box sorting
  • Accelerated root cause analysis of defects by product types and shifts
  • Obtained analytics for contamination, bubbles, runners, color and other defect types
  • Created a foundation for scaling quality control to other types of transparent packaging

Technical Details:

  1. The system uses several technical vision cameras, background lighting, IR and polarization lighting modes.
  2. It detects contamination, bubbles, short shots at the neck, crystallization, color deviations, enlarged injection point, condensation, and internal stresses.
  3. Minimal configuration is suitable for transparent and semi-transparent preforms.
  4. Advanced configurations use color cameras, segmented tables, and IR lighting.
